Panel Discussion: Scheduling in the Spring (Part 2)
Share:

During the spring season, college tennis coaches have flexibility in how they schedule their dual matches. We asked a number of coaches about their scheduling philosophies, and we our first installment of answers ran in early February.

Today, we return to this topic - with comments from more coaches.

Q) What factors go into deciding who your team will play in the spring? Level of competition? Travel? Something else entirely?

Gregory Wyzkowski, head coach, Seton Hall Women

In the Big East conference we do not have mandatory conference scheduling. As coaches we do our best to schedule as many conference opponents first before we schedule other schools. At Seton Hall, we have been scheduling 8-10 Big East matches a season. Normally late March and April are dates reserved for conference matches.

February and early March matches are scheduled with non-conference teams based on travel. Thankfully, we have many competitive teams willing to play us within a three-hour drive from campus. Typically overnight trips involve leaving campus on a Friday, playing two matches on Saturday and Sundaym and returning to campus on Sunday. Scheduling play over the weekend avoids missed class time for our students.
