Maggy Lehmicke of Kirkland, Wash., played competitive soccer and softball before taking up tennis at the age of 11.
Her stepfather, Rudolf Kischel, a trainer (and native of Latvia) at the AV Performance Tennis Club in Bellevue, Wash., introduced her to the "sport of a lifetime," and Maggy became enthralled with the one-on-one competition.
In spite of a relatively late start in the demanding world of tournament tennis, Maggy, now 18, is listed as a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. Ranked No. 2 in the Northwest and the state of Washington, Maggy has signed a national letter of intent with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
"I chose Nebraska for a lot of reasons," said Maggy, who also visited Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. "I clicked with the coaches right away, and when I visited the campus I felt extremely comfortable with the girls. I feel the school has so much to offer, and the tennis team is strong. I've talked to a lot of the girls, and they only have great things to say about the coaches."
Leading the Huskers is Scott Jacobson, in his 21st season at the Nebraska helm, who has claimed over 300 career victories. As of April 5, the Huskers stood at 18-2 and were ranked 17th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Coach Jacobson has high hopes for the newest member of the Nebraska roster.
"Maggy fits the mold of what it truly means to be a member of our Husker family," Coach Jacobson said. "She is selfless in nature, gets along well with others, has tremendous work ethic, and has a burning desire to improve.
