Fall Signing Week '12: Zieba Chooses 'Home-Court' Advantage
Share:

Making the move to college tennis shouldn't be too much of a challenge for Konrad Zieba. Not geographically, at least.

Konrad Zieba heads to nearby Northwestern
The Blue-Chip senior from Glenview, Ill., should feel right at home when he travels 10 miles down the road to take his place on the Northwestern Wildcats tennis team next year.

Zieba's decision on a hometown school, however, wasn't quite as easy to make as one might think. He considered other top schools, such as Harvard, Notre Dame, Michigan and Illinois, all quality universities with established records in athletics. But when he looked at the bigger picture, Zieba said he felt Northwestern had the slight edge to win him over.

In addition to the NU campus, environment and ideal-sized student body, what appealed most to Zieba about joining the Northwestern squad was the full package of academics and athletics.

"The academics and the tennis both played a big factor in my decision," Zieba said. "I had to choose between many great schools, and it was a very difficult decision to make. In the end, I think Northwestern was the most ideal school the fit those two factors. And I love the Big Ten environment. I think it's great to be part of such a terrific and competitive conference. Overall, I'm happy about my decision and very excited for next year."

Armed with his strongest weapons - his serve, backhand down-the-line and, most importantly, consistency - Zieba said he intends to help his team bring the Big Ten conference title back to Northwestern, a feat last accomplished when former pro Todd Martin led the Wildcats to the championship in 1990.

"I believe I can bring a lot of intensity and confidence to the team. I'm definitely looking forward to the dual meets in the Big Ten because it's a great conference. It's going to be tough facing some of those other schools, but I absolutely love the competition and I live for the down-to-the-wire finishes."
