Fall Signing Week '14: Kimberly Yee is a Cardinal

In 2008, Kimberly Yee was featured as one of the Class of 2015's rising stars, having compiled a 72-10 record as a sixth grader, winning seven titles, three third-place finishes and four consolation trophies.

Over the past six years, Yee has sustained that level of blue chip excellence, achieving the top ranking in all age groups and amassing a slew of USTA balls and titles. With her stellar tennis credentials and matching academic achievements, Yee was courted by some of the country's top schools, which made her decision both exciting and difficult.

"It is a nervous process because you've given your whole life to tennis and school so that you can go to a college you want to go to," she explained. "There's only one time you're going to have the opportunity to pick a college."

Yee believes she chose the perfect one for her: Stanford University.

"I had amazing options," said the 18-year-old Las Vegas native. "At the very end it came down to Penn, which had the most amazing coaches, and Stanford. When you visit a school, you get this sense whether it's right for you or not. And when I went [to Palo Alto], it was right."

Yee took her only official visit to Stanford, but had unofficially visited various campuses.

"I grew up with some of the girls on the Stanford team," she said. "That was a huge comfort factor for me."

The senior, who attends Odyssey Charter High School, plans to study psychology and business, but will enter college undecided on her major.

While her tennis resume has opened doors for her, Yee thinks that Stanford saw her for more than just an outstanding athlete.

"During my official visit, it wasn't just about tennis anymore," she recalled. "It was about the person - who I am. I take great pride in that. It's not just that I'm good in tennis, but I think character is so important. I feel like I could bring different elements to the team. Tennis is part of it, but they look for the whole person. There's not a single girl that I didn't like on the team. They're just good people. They're genuine. I think that's the type of person Stanford looks for, and I am glad I fit the bill."
