Eight Intriguing Questions for 2015
Share:

It's January... so it must be time for another edition of "Intriguing Questions" from columnist Colette Lewis. Today, in the tenth article in as many years, Colette poses eight questions about junior and college tennis that should be answered over the coming months. You can see last year's questions here.

The answers to last year's questions - yes, no, plenty, no, almost, yes, too early to tell, no - just whet our appetite for more in 2015.

What more can CiCi Bellis do in 2015?

1) What can CiCi Bellis do for an encore?

I asked that question last year and the 15-year-old Californian answered by winning the Girls 18s Nationals (the youngest since Lindsay Davenport), winning a round at the US Open (the youngest since Anna Kournikova), leading her team to the Junior Fed Cup title and finishing the year as the ITF World Junior Champion and 257 in the WTA rankings.

Although she has earned three additional tournament appearances by finishing in the ITF junior Top 5, Bellis is still restricted by the number of ITF and WTA events she can play due to her age, so improving on her WTA ranking may be a challenge. A junior slam may be the bucket list item for 2015.

2) Who will replace Patrick McEnroe as General Manager of USTA Player Development?

After more than six years leading Player Development, Patrick McEnroe is vacating the position, with the stated reason his reluctance to move to the new USTA facility being constructed in Lake Nona, Florida. Many private coaches in the US are hoping his replacement is someone with in-the-trenches experience in developing and teaching tennis, but the USTA may prefer a former pro with name recognition and the political instincts to navigate the organization's board and committee structure. James Blake, recently endorsed by Andy Roddick, is considered the most likely choice, but current USTA Lead National coach Tom Gullikson also has strong support from insiders.
