Lilian Poling (West Point, N.Y.)

Four-star junior Lilian Poling went to the Orange Bowl in December, where she was the first alternate. Unfortunately, she didn't get in, but practicing with the high-level players of the tournament helped her realize that she could play at their level.

"Everything started to come together, and I just started believing that I could play and win at a higher level," she said.

Challenging herself by training with high-level players has been instrumental in her game. Her father, Jim Poling, is head coach of the men's tennis team at the U.S. Military Academy.

"I think being around the West Point Cadets on both the men's and women's teams has had a big effect on Lilian," he said. "She has watched them train hard, watched them win and lose and watched how they handle themselves in all sorts of situations."

Poling trains at Court Sense Tennis Training Center in Tenafly, N.J., with Saul Salazar. Poling has been working with her coaches to develop a game strategy for the future.

"We have talked about building a game that would allow her to play at a top college program, but that type of game probably would not come together until 16 or 17," Jim Poling said.

For now, Lilian Poling is working on consistency. "When things get tight, she is more likely to hit the ball even harder. Lately, she has been working hard on rolling the ball more to become more consistent," Jim Poling said. "It all seemed to come together for her."

The four-star junior, who will be rated a five-star when the new ratings are released later this spring, showed off her consistency in a match against blue-chip junior Alexa Graham in the semifinals of the Easter Grand Prix at West Rock. The match was a close three sets, going to a tiebreaker in the third.

"Alexa is an amazing player, and I played some of the best tennis I have ever played to beat her," Poling said. "That match gave me a lot of confidence."

Poling carried her success into January, when she reached the finals of the Eastern Super Six World Gym Tournament.

Her success has her thinking a great deal about college. "I am looking forward to playing college tennis," Poling said. "I would love to go to a college in a warm climate and a with a coach that really wants to develops his or her players."
