Fall Signing Week '15: Sophia Adams Goes Spartan
Share:

Sophia Adams once visited North Carolina for a wedding. She liked it so much that she's going back to play tennis there.

That's how a Miami girl became the latest tennis recruit for UNC Greensboro.

"I really liked the area because we were up in the mountains," Adams said. "Greensboro isn't exactly in the mountains, but I really like that part of North Carolina as well. I liked the feeling it gave me."

Adams also visited UNC-Asheville and UNC-Charlotte and considered other Mid-Atlantic schools before settling on the Spartans of coach Alejandra Guerra. Adams, a four-star recruit who is rated the No. 33 senior recruit in the Southeast, will sign in November.

Adams was recruited last spring by then-head coach Jeff Trivette, who now holds the position of director of UNCG's men's and women's tennis programs. Guerra, a former Southern Conference player of the year for UNC-Greensboro, was promoted to head coach in August.

Trivette began recruiting Adams a couple of years ago, and what might've sealed the deal was a match that he saw Adams play in June. Adams calls it the most memorable match of her junior career. She defeated Courtney Hebard, now a freshman at Marquette, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in a match that last 3 hours, 30 minutes.

The duration of the match seemed to mean as much to Adams as the victory itself.

"My best memories in tennis are probably all the long and tedious matches I've had," Adams said. "I tend to split sets a lot, so most of my matches are long. I've had many really close ones this year. Those are major memories."

Adams has trained the past five years at Next Level Tennis with coach Caesar Stewart. She attends Terra Environmental Research Institute, a public magnet school. Playing for her high school team, Adams won the Florida Class 3A doubles title this year with freshman Michelle Adan-Pol.
