Countdown: Ty Gentry Stays Close to Home at Oregon

Ty Gentry is a natural talent, and even without his discipline to be exceptional, his athleticism and raw power would be anything but ordinary.

"Succeeding comes from dedication, work ethic, grit, athletic ability and awareness," said Dan Willman, Gentry's coach who also is director at Northwest High Performance Tennis in Kirkland, Wash.

Gentry is "one of the best athletes I've seen as a junior," Willman observed. "His huge serve will only get better from consistent match play and putting on some weight."

At six-foot-five and 175 pounds, the blue chip recruit from Olympia, Washington, played every sport growing up, and excelled in all of them. By eighth grade, Gentry had to limit his activities to tennis and basketball, sports in which he continues to stand out.

He will finish his senior year playing on both teams at Tumwater High School, but starting in Fall 2016, he will be - for the first time in his life - a single sport athlete.

He has committed to play tennis for the University of Oregon.

"We are thrilled with the addition of Ty to the Duck Family," Head Coach Nils Schyllander said. "His upside is huge, and both Coach [Jonas] Piibor and myself feel there are no limits to what he can accomplish at Oregon. In addition to being an outstanding tennis player, Ty is a tremendous person who will fit in great with our team and with the culture we are building as a program."

Initially, Gentry wasn't quite sure which colleges to consider, but the interest that the Ducks coaches showed him while at the National Hardcourts at Kalamazoo in 2014 piqued his curiosity. Shortly after he returned home, he made an unofficial visit to Eugene.

"I loved the campus, loved the coaches, loved the players, and felt that I can have a pretty big impact on the team right away if I went there," said the two-time defending state champion. "When I stepped on the campus at Oregon, I could see myself going there. That was really big for me. I felt that I wanted to be on a campus where I felt comfortable."

Eugene is a four-hour drive from home, a commute that his family and friends can easily make to cheer him on.

He plans to major in business while at Oregon and hopes to land a job in sports management.
