Spring Signing Week '16: Shelby Groeneveld Chooses the Sea Lions
Share:

To some teenagers the idea of choosing a college more than 2,500 miles from home might be a little unsettling. That's not the case at all for Shelby Groeneveld.

Born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Groeneveld will be switching coasts this fall when the 17-year-old Calvary Christian Academy senior walks on the campus at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and shortly after that takes the court for the Sea Lions.

Despite having deep Florida roots, Groeneveld acknowledges she has always loved California, having visited several of the Golden State's prestigious locations like Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, San Diego and Mammoth Mountain. However, she admits being away from family will be the tough part.

"It will be hard, but my parents have always encouraged me to reach for my dreams and be independent," Groeneveld said. "And I know they will come out and visit me a lot."

Groeneveld recalls her fondness for California began at an early age.

"I have always wanted to be in California since I was little," she said. "I took my visit (to Point Loma) and had a chance to practice with the team. The coach (Curt Wheeler) saw me practice and offered me a scholarship."

Wheeler likes what he sees in Groeneveld and envisions her being a big contributor to the Sea Lions.

"I believe Shelby's mental toughness and great work ethic will be two of her dominant strengths in college tennis," Wheeler wrote via email. "From my experience, college players who possess those strengths have the ability to greatly improve their overall game and also perform well under pressure."

Groeneveld was able to pick up on a few more important details during her recruiting visit to Point Loma.

"What I really liked was the team atmosphere," Groeneveld said. "I love the location, obviously. The school is right at the beach."
