Roundup

Makenzie Myers (Evansville, Ind.)

Three-star senior Makenzie Myers comes from a family of avid tennis players. Her parents, Thomas and Andrea Myers, own the Tri-State Athletic Club in Evansville, Ind. It was only natural that the younger Myers excelled in the sport from a young age.

"I really started to become serious by traveling and putting in countless hours on court and in the gym," she said.

Myers has only increased her time spent in competition since then, participating in mostly USTA tournaments. Myers credits this for her recent success. "[I played in] a large quantity of matches in both May and June. The many matches allowed me to improve my competitive skills and mindset," she said.

Myers works with coach Peter Moore at her parents' club. Recently, the two have been improving Myers's forehand and fitness. "My forehand also contributed to my success last month," she said. "It dramatically improved through practice. It has become one of the essential parts of my tennis game."

The Evansville, Ind., native, who is the top-ranked senior in the state of Indiana, named her best win of June as a match at the Marian Wood Baird Team Cup. Myers played five-star sophomore Samantha Choi in the finals of the Central Indiana vs. Chicago team match.

"My mindset was to just 'swing for the fences,' as my dad would say, meaning I would just stay loose, go for my shots, and stay aggressive throughout the entire match," Myers said. She took the first set, 6-3.

"At the end of my second set, every other match was finished, so both Chicago's and Central Indiana's entire teams were screaming, yelling and cheering," Myers said. This did not faze the rising senior, however, who took the second set as well, 7-5. This started the tournament off right for Myers, who went undefeated in the cup.

Another notable win for Myers in June included cinching the consolation draw of the Cita Midwest Qualifier. Myers earned a 12-3 record for June.

June was month of many accomplishments for Myers. In addition to her many wins, she verbally committed to playing tennis at Miami University.

"I chose that school because they are top in their conference, I like the team and coach and the school has strong academics," Myers said. "I feel that Miami University is the perfect fit for me. Go Redhawks!"
