As summer break is coming to a close, junior players squeeze in the last tournaments and championships before school starts up, many of which are huge events. We recognize some players who kept up the speed last month with our PlaySight Hot 100 Lists.

The PlaySight Hot 100 lists are published each month, and the September lists feature the one hundred boys and girls who most improved their rankings during the month of August. You can find out more about the PlaySight Hot 100 - and how the lists are calculated - by reading here.

Roundup

Carolyn Brooner (Poway, Calif.) Carolyn Brooner

Soon-to-be three-star rising senior Carolyn Brooner recently recovered from surgery. The last several months, she has struggled to get back into the swing of things. For over a year, she worked without a coach to get herself back into playing shape.

This is when Brooner found coach Adrian Waisfeld. "He has breathed new life back into her game, and she is playing some of the best tennis she has played in a couple of years," her parents, Dan and Liz Brooner, said.

Carolyn Brooner also gives credit to her coach for recent improvement. "He has really helped me find a new love for the game. He makes the training special and focused, always pushing me harder to do my best every time I step on the court," she said.

Brooner and her coach are working on her serve strength and consistency. They are also working on harnessing her power as a left-handed player.

"Our main focus is consistent placement of my serves and strategies for when and how to use these serves," she said. "We are also working hard on my volleys since I love playing doubles and want to incorporate the volleys and net play more in my singles."

Brooner's last month of competition began with a gradual build up when she reached the semifinals of the 43rd Wilbur Folsom Memorial Open Tournament. She then went on to win two consecutive tournaments, the RPTC Adrian Waisfeld Juantopo Cucurucho Tournament and the 21st MCB Balboa Junior Championship. She earned a 10-2 record for July and catapulted over 200 spots up the Babolat Class Rankings.

The left-handed player, though a strong independent competitor, loves playing in a team atmosphere. She will be a fourth-year starter on her team at Rancho Bernardo High School this coming school year.

"I am a hardworking and supportive member of our team and I hope that we can have the opportunity to compete for the CIF Championships this year," she said. "Tennis is such an individual sport that having the support of your friends and teammates is an important part of what makes tennis great for me."

Brooner's love of the team environment will be a major factor in her consideration of college teams. "I don't just want to be a name on a roster," she said. "I want an opportunity to compete and earn the respect of my teammates, and I want to play meaningful matches."
