USTA Boys 14 National Championships

SAN ANTONIO - Ninth-seeded Spencer Simon of Santa Barbara, Calif., used strong forehand drives to beat No. 10 Jeremy Efferding of Lake Worth, Fla., 6-3, 6-2 Aug. 12 in the singles final of the USTA Boys 14 National Championships at McFarlin Tennis Center.

Simon, who turns 15 in February, was awarded the coveted USTA gold ball after the 1-hour, 20-minute match on McFarlin's Court No. 22.

"I wanted to win this tournament," said Simon, the Southern California Sectional champion. "My forehand stayed up and I wasn't missing a lot. My shoulder was hurting, but I placed my serve. I felt I was in control of the final. It's a good way to end 14s."
