Alex Lee Claims USTA Boys 14 Nationals
Alex Lee of Oak Brook, Ill., is now a two-time national champion. The top-seeded Lee captured the singles crown of the USTA Boys 14 National Championships, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 5 Jameson Corsillo of Boca Raton, Fla. Prior to his win at McFarlin Tennis Center, Lee captured the Easter Bowl championship in a three-set match against Andrew Dale.

Pielet Wins Third Gold Ball in 14s Nationals
Gianna Pielet summed up the meaning of the USTA Girls 14 National Championships pretty well. "You win a gold ball in this tournament; the others you don't," Pielet said. "I get my name put in back of the USTA yearbook. That's a very prestigious award." Pielet defeated seven opponents in the tournament without losing a set. She was at her best in the final - a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sonia Maheshwari of Morrisville, N.C.

Victor Lilov, displaying the precocious abilities to analyze an ongoing match calmly and to make the appropriate adjustments, defeated a relentless 17th seed Braden Shick 6-4, 6-1, to win the singles crown at the rain-soaked Boys 12s National Hardcourt Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Wiersholm Validates Clay Title by Winning 12s Nats
It's been quite a summer for Kirkland, Wash., resident, Katja Wiersholm. Three weeks after winning her first gold ball at the USTA Girl's 12s National Clay Court Championships in Boca Raton, the rising seventh grader added a second gold ball to her collection at the Lake Windward Club in Alpharetta, Ga. by winning the USTA Girl's 12s National Championships. Wiersholm edged Vivian Ovrootsky of San Jose, Calif., 6-3, 6-3, in a match that lasted just over 75 minutes.

Memphis in July is no place for the faint of heart. Temperatures in the high 90s and a heat index often in the 110s, compounded by five rain or lightning delays, presented one physical and mental challenge after another as the USTA Girls 18s Clay Court Championships wore on. For Ann Li, no obstacle proved insurmountable, as she earned her first singles gold ball with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Amanda Meyer.

Sebastian Korda Wins Boys 18s Clay Courts
Unseeded and undaunted, Sebastian Korda picked up the first gold ball of his singles career as he downed Alexandre Rotsaert in the finals of the Metropolia USTA Clay Court Boys 18s National Championships at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Korda, 16, needed a little over two hours as he defeated the hometown favorite 6-4, 6-1 to win the singles title in an all-Florida match-up.

Noel Wins Second Straight Clay Court Title
Overcoming a significant deficit when the heat index is in triple digits is never part of the game plan. But scrappy, feisty 13-year-old Alexa Noel did so anyway to capture the singles title at the USTA Girls 16 National Clay Court Championships. In a clash of two players who now call New Jersey home, Noel outlasted Amber O'Dell in 2 hours and 20 minutes by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Good Greif - Indianapolis Teen Wins Boys 16s
In the end, it was too much Greif for Jenson Brooksby in the finals of the USTA Clay Court Boys 16s National Championships in Delray Beach. The seventh-seeded Lukas Greif failed to lose a set in the entire tournament and cruised past Brooksby, 6-1, 6-1 for his first gold ball in singles play. Greif, 16, a rising junior, had won two gold balls in doubles play and a silver ball in the 16s this year.

Christine Inah Canete Takes Girl's 14 Clays
Nobody had to light a fire under 12-year old, Christine Inah Canete, this week at the USTA National Girls' 14s Clay Court Championships in Plantation, Fla. - as an electrical fire caused some minor disruptions to the schedule and a bit of smoke. Canete, the No. 9 seed, went up against Ellie Coleman, a No. 17 seed, in the singles final and took a 6-1, 6-1 match to win her second gold ball of the year.

Khan Twins Dominate Boys 14 Clays
It might be the ultimate family victory, but twins Zane and Faris Khan don't really like playing against each other, even for the championship of a national tournament. It happened again last week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Zane pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Faris in the singles final of the USTA Boys 14 National Clay Court Championships. The two native Texans also won the doubles title.

Top-seeded Evan Wen of Morristown, N.J., took home the singles gold ball of the USTA Boys 12 National Clay Court Championships on July 23. Wen endured a stomach ailment and long matches to win his first national title. He defeated sixth-seeded Victor Lilov of Raleigh, N.C., 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the more-than two-hour final played at the LTP Tennis and Swim Club in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

The USTA National Spring Team Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center had been plagued by rain in the first two years of its existence, but last week, with an adjustment to the schedule, every match in the 32-team tournament was played to completion, with the Stingrays capturing the girls title and the Rams collecting the boys title.

Californians Failla and Huang Take 18s Titles
A pair of Californians - Jessica Failla of Ramona and Austen Huang of Elk Grove - won their first national singles titles on Jan. 2 at the USTA National Winter Championships in Mesa, Ariz. Failla, a freshman at Southern Cal, defeated Alyvia Jones of Midland, Mich., 6-3 6-1 in the girls 18 final. Huang, the No. 8 boys seed, didn't have a set closer than 6-3 until the final, where he defeated No. 1 seed William Genesen of Tulsa, Okla., 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 for the boys title.

Top-seeded Choy Wins Girls 16s Winter Nationals
Sara Choy may be small in stature, but her game is quite big. The diminutive, 4-foot-11 inch, 100-pounder won her first gold ball on Saturday in the USTA Winter National Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona with a comfortable 6-4; 6-4 win over Hannah Zhao in the Girls 16s singles final.

Sixth-seeded Alshon Wins 16s Winter Nationals
Boca Raton's Christian Alshon hadn't lost a set throughout the USTA Winter National Boys 16s Championships in Arizona. That was until he faced the top-seeded Carson Haskins in the title match at Scottsdale Ranch Park in Scottsdale. The two split the first two sets, 6-4 and Alshon trailed 5-4 in the third set before he held serve and went on to close out the match winning the final three games to secure his first ever gold ball at nationals in singles.

The USTA National Winter Boys and Girls 14 singles titles were captured by first-time Gold Ball winners. Tenth-seeded Ryder Jackson of Nicasio, Calif., emerged as the boys champion. Mae Fmar Canete, the No. 3 seed from Los Angeles, earned the top prize in the girls event.

Basavareddy, Canete Strike Gold in 12s
The 12s champions of the 2016 Winter Nationals share a few things in common: Nishesh Basavareddy and Christine Canete were each seeded third and upset higher ranked players. Each player has a sibling who played in the 14s division, and both have Southern California roots. And of course, they now both own USTA gold balls. Basavareddy earned his first gold by beating top seed Samuel Landau 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-2, and Canete beat second seed Katrina Scott 6-2, 6-2.

Tiafoe Outlasts Kozlov to Claim 18s Title
Upsets were as rare as rain drops during the ten days of the USTA Boys 18s Nationals at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium, with seven of the top eight seeds reaching the quarterfinals. After nine days of mostly expected results, the final delivered more than four hours of excitement and drama with top seed Frances Tiafoe defeating No. 3 seed Stefan Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 6-4 to claim the championship and the US Open main draw wild card that accompanies it.

Kenin Returns, Finishes the Job at Girls 18s
Sofia Kenin was devastated last year when she lost in the semifinals of the USTA Girls 18s Nationals. She realized how close she came to receiving a coveted wild card into the main draw of the U.S. Open women's singles event. Kenin, 16, returned this year determined to be focused, and the No. 3 seeded Kenin of Pembroke Pines, Fla., outlasted top-seeded Tornado Alicia Black of Boca Raton, Fla., 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to capture the singles title in San Diego.

Kypson Rebounds from Surgery to Claim 16s Title
A ruptured appendix just two months ago isn't exactly ideal preparation for the major national summer tournaments, but Patrick Kypson's rapid recovery was in evidence when he sailed through the draw without dropping a set to capture the USTA Boys 16 National Championship at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium. The 15-year-old from Greenville, North Carolina, seeded third, defeated No. 4 seed Alexandre Rotsaert 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.

Unseeded Desiatnikov Wins Girls 16 Nationals
Because she entered the tournament as an unseeded player, it was understandable to overlook Abigail Desiatnikov as a serious threat at the 2015 USTA Girls 16 Nationals. Desiatnikov certainly didn't see it that way, and the 14-year-old Atlanta resident capped a brilliant performance stretched over seven matches when she defeated 15th-seeded Whitney Osuigwe 6-1, 7-6 (2) on Saturday to capture the Girls 16s Nationals.

Nathan Han Wins USTA Boys 14 Nationals
Nathan Han is now the proud owner of a USTA Gold Ball. The Tulsa, Okla., resident captured the coveted top singles prize of the USTA Boys 14 National Championships Aug. 8 at McFarlin Tennis Center. The fourth-seeded Han beat No. 5 Ronan Jachuck of Boca Raton, Fla. 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a two-and-a-half hour battle in the San Antonio heat.

Volynets Wins Another Gold Ball in Georgia at 14s
Georgia has been good to California's Katie Volynets. A year ago, the 13-year-old from Walnut Grove won the USTA Girls 12 Nationals in Alpharetta, Ga., to claim her first national title. Now, Volynets has won her second gold ball, also in Georgia. She defeated Naomi Cheong of Las Vegas 6-3, 6-1 on Aug. 7 to win the USTA Girls 14 National Championships at Peachtree City Tennis Center.

Saud Alhogbani Wins Second Consecutive Gold
Saud Alhogbani's strategy in every tennis match is simple: give each point 100 percent, try to get everything back in play, and be aggressive when the opportunity arises. Superb execution earned the Blue Chip athlete from Alexandria, Va., the singles gold ball at the 2015 Boys 12s National Hard Court Championships in North Little Rock, Arkansas, defeating No. 5 seed Benjamin Kittay of Potomac, Md., 6-3, 6-0 in the final.

Riffice Pulls Through to Claim Gold in Boys 18s
A seven-hour rain delay and a few rounds of pickle ball may have saved Sam Riffice in the boys' 18s final of the USTA National Clay Court Championships. Riffice trailed 5-1 in the first set of the title match against fellow Boca Raton resident Alexandre Rotsaert before a downpour forced the competitors off the court. When the pair returned Riffice rallied for a 7-6 (5); 6-3 victory for the first gold ball of his career.

Ellyse Hamlin Wins Singles, Doubles in Girls 18s
Ellyse Hamlin has some glittering hardware on display at her home in Fairfield, Conn. Hamlin captured the gold balls of the singles and doubles events at the USTA Girls 18 Clay Courts Championships at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The sixth-seeded Hamlin beat No. 17 Kaitlyn McCarthy of Cary, N.C., 6-7 (8), 6-1, 7-5 in a three-hour singles battle. Hamlin and teamed with Katharine Fahey of Fair Haven, N.J., to claim the doubles title.

It wasn't until four years ago that Danny "DJ" Thomas first started taking tennis seriously. Now the talented 15-year-old is taking the sport by storm - literally. Thomas, of Columbus, OH, won his first gold ball in singles as he captured the Boys 16s USTA National Clay Court Championships with a 6-2; 6-4 win over Aleks Huryn (Alpharetta, GA) at the Boca West Country Club.

Twelfth-seeded Saud Alhogbani won the singles title of the USTA Boys 12 Clay Court Championships with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 4 Karl Lee on July 18 at Hanes Park-Joe White Tennis Center. Alhogbani, who hails from Alexandria, Va., captured the coveted gold ball by knocking off four higher-seeded players in the process.

Rubin Collects Two Titles, Two Wild Cards
Noah Rubin's summer went from great to extraordinary in the just over a month. In July, the 18-year-old New Yorker won the Wimbledon boys title as an unseeded qualifier. Last week he trumped that with two titles at Kalamazoo, defeating defending champion Collin Altamirano 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the singles final, after joining with Stefan Kozlov to take the doubles championships, and in the process earning two US Open main draw wild cards.

CiCi Bellis Defeats Black to Claim 18s
Before even stepping onto the court at the USTA Girls' 18s National Championships, CiCi Bellis had her trip booked to the U.S. Open. But Bellis wanted an upgrade in her playing status in New York. Instead of just playing against the juniors, the 15-year-old from Atherton, Calif., wanted a shot at the professionals. Bellis earned that chance by capturing the hardcourt title at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

McNally Sweeps 16s Kalamazoo Titles
John McNally definitely had a target on his back entering the 16s USTA National Championships. The Easter Bowl and Clay Courts champion was 57-1 this year entering the tournament. At the end of the week, McNally had extended his singles record to 64-1 and earned two more USTA gold balls.

During her early-round matches at the USTA Girls 16s National Championships Kylie McKenzie was not only building momentum, she was dismantling the field in impressive fashion. The 15-year-old blue chip recruit from Anthem, Ariz., maintained that same high level of play the rest of the week and went on to capture the title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 2 seed Kayla Day of Santa Barbara at the Barnes Center.

An opponent her own age. Keenan Mayo Takes Boys 14 Clay Trophy
It was a hot, wet and muggy week in Fort Lauderdale for the USTA National Boys 14 Clay Court Championships. It's hard to say that was really unusual, but what was rare was that there were no players in doubles and singles finals, not a lot of upsets, and a whole lot of Californians in the winners' circle - including singles champion Keenan Mayo.

Gauff Takes First National in Girls' 12s
While the last remaining spectators were wiping sweat from their brows in the 96 degree heat, Cori Gauff was all smiles when she came off the court. Winning a gold ball in singles and a silver ball in doubles will at the Girls' 12 USTA National Clay Court Championships will usually do that for you.

Zane Wins Battle of the Khans in the 12s
It has become common for twins and siblings to win doubles championships in the tennis universe. But rarely do twins face each other in a singles championship match. That was the case on July 19 as Zane and Faris Khan battled each other for the USTA Boys 12 Clay Courts gold ball. The winner was fifth seeded-Zane Khan, who defeated the No. 11 Faris Khan 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 at the Randy Pate Tennis Academy.

First USTA Team Champions Crowned in Mobile
128 boys and 128 girls arrived for competition last week in Mobile, Alabama, and each left with seven new friends - their teammates - when the USTA's first Spring Team Championships were complete. Two 12s, two 14s, two 16s and two 18s division players were placed on each of the 32 teams. The teams had fun but competed fiercely - since a USTA gold ball served as the ultimate prize.

Altamirano Makes History in Kalamazoo 18s
When seventeen-year-old Collin Altamirano returns to defend the USTA Boys 18s Nationals he won Sunday afternoon at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium, he won't be an underdog. After defeating No. 14 seed Jared Donaldson 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in a best-of-five match, Altamirano is now in the record books as the only unseeded player ever to win a singles title in the 71-year history of the Kalamazoo National Championships.

Sachia Vickery Shines at Nationals in San Diego
From the moment she first picked up a tennis racket, Sachia Vickery has wanted to play in the US Open. That fantasy will soon become a reality. The top-seeded Miami resident defeated second-seeded Alexandra Kiick of Plantation, Fla., 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to capture the singles title at the USTA Girls 18s National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Tommy Paul Takes Second National 16s Title
Tommy Paul arrived in Kalamazoo as the 16s Clay Court champion in singles and doubles, and when the wet week was over, Paul left the USTA National Championships with a third gold ball, winning the 16s singles championship with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over his friend and roommate Jake DeVine.

Katerina Stewart Streaks to 16s Title
Katerina Stewart walked on to Stadium Court at the Barnes Center on Saturday afternoon having won 12 of her last 13 matches at the USTA Girls 16s Nationals. The only thing the Miami resident had yet to do was earn a championship. Presented with a second opportunity, Stewart rose to the occasion and captured the 16s singles championship with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over top-seeded Ena Shibahara.

Brian Cernoch Wins USTA Boys 14 Nationals
Brian Cernoch of North Bethesda, Md., dropped his first set in singles of the USTA Boys 14 National Championships in the championship match against second-seeded Maxwell Mendelsohn of Little Rock, Ark. But that would be the only set he would lose, as Cernoch went on to win his first USTA gold ball with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory after a 2-hour, 22-minute battle.

Day Outlasts Lahey in Girls' 14s
Kayla Day and Ashley Lahey train together back home in California, and they hit together last week in Georgia before every match at the USTA Girls 14 National Championships. That included the singles final, when the two friends met for the championship. Day, of Santa Barbara, survived four match points and won 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 in Peachtree City.

Brooksby Claims First Gold in North Little Rock
Jenson "JT" Brooksby first qualified for Level-1 tournaments as a precocious nine-year-old Californian. Now, three years and thousands of practice balls later, the blue chip athlete finally owns his first gold ball in singles. On the second Saturday of August 2013 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, Brooksby defeated the fourth-seeded surprise finalist Thomas Yu, 6-3, 6-1 in the USTA Boys' 12 Nationals.

Hurricane Tyra Black Duplicates Sister's Victory
Mild temperatures, with a few drops of rain thrown in to make things interesting, greeted the players this week at the USTA Girls 12s Nationals in Alpharetta, Ga. But it was a hurricane that had everyone talking at week's end. Not a hurricane with swirling winds and dangerous lightning, but 12-year old Hurricane Tyra Black, with a dominating serve, quick hands, and a punishing forehand.

Ouellet-Pizer Claims First Gold Ball at Clays
The July weather in Memphis is predictable - hot and humid - but the results of the Girls 18s Clay Courts last week at the Racquet Club of Memphis definitely were not. A week of upsets ended with 15-year-old Chloe Ouellet-Pizer defeating unseeded Terri Fleming 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 to claim her first gold ball in USTA competition.

Kerznerman Prevails in Boys 18s Clays
Danny Kerznerman entered the recent USTA Boys' 18 National Clay Court Championships brimming with confidence. The Brooklyn native then found himself down 6-2; 4-2 in the semifinals against second-seeded Henrik Wiersholm before rallying for a 2-6; 7-5; 6-0 victory to advance to the final. Kerznerman went on to capture the second gold ball of his career with a 6-4; 6-3 victory over Mitch Stewart of Washington in the final.

CiCi Bellis Wins Title at Girls 16s Clays
CiCi Bellis seemed so fresh in the second set, one of her post-match comments seemed incredible. "I've never done any off-court conditioning," the wispy Northern Californian said after wearing down Katerina Stewart of Miami 7-5, 6-1 to win the USTA Girls 16 Clay Court Championships' singles crown at Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club. "That's because my on-court drilling is so taxing and intense."

Paul Pulls Out Win in Boys 16s
Tommy Paul won more than national bragging rights with his 6-2; 6-4 victory over Reilly Opelka in the finals of the recent USTA Boys' 16 National Clay Court Championships at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Paul, 16, also gets bragging rights with his three roommates from the USTA Training Center who took all four spots in the semifinals.

First Singles Gold Ball for Claire Liu
Claire Liu gained fame nearly two years ago when she won the Junior Orange Bowl as an unseeded 11-year-old. While she has won other big tournaments, a singles title at a USTA national championship has evaded her. The young teenager from Thousand Oaks, Calif., took care of some unfinished business last week in Plantation, Fla., earning a gold ball at the USTA Girls 14 Super National Clay Court Championships.

Makarome Wins USTA Boys 14 National Clay Courts
Fifth-seeded Noah Makarome overcame heavy rain, match delays, muscle cramps and 5-1 blown leads to capture the USTA Boys 14 National Clay Court singles championship. Makarome, from Wesley Chapel, Fla., defeated No. 6 seed Sam Riffice of Roseville, Calif., 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) on July 20 at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center to take home the gold ball.

New York's Steven Sun shines in Winston-Salem
Steven Sun, affectionately known as "The Machine" at his club, started a bit off-kilter and got down 5-3 in the first set, and again 2-0 in the second of the 2013 National Clay Court Championship finals. Just as an engine sometimes sputters, Sun momentarily stalled, but a quick reboot allowed him to prevail over Blue Chip Brandon Nakashima 7-6(3), 6-2.

Novikov Earns First Gold Balls, Wild Cards in 18s
Dennis Novikov has been a top junior since the 14s age group, but a USTA gold ball had proved elusive until last weekend's USTA Boys 18 National Championship in Kalamazoo, when he collected two. Those two had added luster, courtesy of the main draw US Open wild cards he received for claiming the singles title over Alexios Halebian 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, as well the doubles title a day earlier.

Wiersholm Sweeps 16s Titles in Kalamazoo Debut
When a tournament has 70 years of history, chances are any accomplishment has a precedent. But to find a player younger than 15-year-old Henrik Wiersholm who swept both singles and doubles titles at the USTA Boys 16 Nationals at Kalamazoo, you would have to go back to 1971, when 14-year-old Billy Martin, the current men's head coach at UCLA, won both championships.

Kimberly Yee began her journey toward one of the most prestigious titles in junior tennis on Sunday, Aug. 5, on the Stadium Court of the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Six days later, she returned to that same court to complete a brilliant week with a victory over Katerina Stewart of Miami to capture the 16s championship at the USTA Junior Girls Nationals.

The home of Taylor Fritz in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., is glittering with gold balls. Fritz won his third overall top prize by sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Boys 14 National Championships held Aug. 5-10 at San Antonio's McFarlin Tennis Center.

Sofia Kenin Wins Sixth Gold Ball in Peachtree City
Sofia Kenin had to get through the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds last week to win the USTA Girls 14 Nationals in Peachtree City, Ga., but it brought the best out in the 13-year-old from Pembroke Pines, Fla. Kenin won the title. It was her sixth career USTA Gold Ball in singles and doubles.

Roscoe Bellamy - 2012 Little Rock Champion
Top seed Roscoe Bellamy, pushed to a third set by a 17th seeded finalist, calmly set aside the heat, humidity, fatigue, doubts, hopes and emotions that accompany a Level-1 championship match. In doing so, he overcame a spirited challenge by Danny (DJ) Thomas 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to win the gold ball at the 2012 Hardcourts in North Little Rock.

Desiatnikov Wins First Gold Ball
Abigail Desiatnikov was the No. 1 seed last week at the Girls 12 Nationals in Alpharetta, Ga., but getting her first Gold Ball in singles was no easy sitter for the 11-year-old from Gates Mills, Ohio. Desiatnikov beat second-seeded Ellie Douglas of McKinney, Texas, 7-6, 6-4 in the final. That's the same opponent who trounced Desiatnikov 6-1, 6-2 in the Clay Court semifinals a month earlier.
