We talked to some of the top performers:

Caroline Hinshaw (Centerville, Ohio)

Caroline Hinshaw bounced back from a bout with Covid-19 to post a 12-4 record in Girls 18s in January.

She took third place at the L4 Closed at the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Racquet and Fitness. The four-star 5-foot-5 right-hander also advanced to the finals of the L5 Midwest Open at the Perrysburg (Ohio) Tennis Center.

Hinshaw’s performances bumped her up to No. 122 from 143rd in the TennisRecruiting.net rankings.

Last August, Hinshaw won the Bronze Ball in the 16s at the National Doubles Championships with Clara Owen. Hinshaw, a junior, and Owen, a sophomore, won the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Doubles Championship for Centerville High School last October.

“After getting Covid-19 over Christmas break, I was forced to take a week off from tennis and any type of training,” Hinshaw said. “I believe the break helped my body recover after lots of training for Winter Nationals in Orlando (Florida). Once I got back out on the courts, I worked with my coaches even harder, since I was having issues with my breathing. My coaches had me run, do lots of sets and work harder.

“My coaches also started working with me on transitioning into the court and developing a more aggressive game. I think that separates me from other players, because I do not just grind from the baseline. I am looking to move in and take a volley to finish the point.”

Hinshaw’s coaches are Ryan Meyer of the South Regency Tennis Club in Miamisburg, Ohio and Lynn McNally of Harpers Point Tennis Club in Mason, Ohio.

Hinshaw’s older sister, Sarah, plays tennis for Goshen College in Indiana. She started playing tennis at age 7, and Caroline did not want to be left out.

“Caroline is so much more than a strong competitor and hard worker on and off the court,” said her parents Steven and Peggy Hinshaw. “With tennis, she has this magical way of bringing people together and making everything more fun, as a result. Caroline has so many wonderful people in her life because of tennis. She is fortunate to have really strong role models and leaders in her coaches. While tennis has its moments, overall, the fun and enjoyment she experiences in practice and when we travel to tournaments is very special and means a lot to her.”

Hinshaw posted a 4.0 grade-point average in 2021. She was elected to the All-Ohio Tennis Team, and was All-Area Player of the Year for the past two seasons. Hinshaw also was the All-Conference Player of the Year for the last three years, and received the coaches and sportsmanship awards from her high school.

“I am looking for a college with a strong team that wants to get better every day and excel,” Hinshaw said. “College is a team sport, so I want a team that works hard and has fun with each other. I want to grow as a student and as a tennis player, and help my team to win matches at the highest level possible.”
