STILLWATER, Okla. - The NCAA Division I singles championships started quietly less than 12 hours after the completion of the exciting team championships finals at Oklahoma State's Greenwood Tennis Center. That calm didn't last long, with upsets and unprecedented performances dominating the six-day tournament, culminating in come-from-behind victories in the championship matches by Alabama's Filip Planinsek and Miami's Alexa Noel.

The men's tournament began without top seed Johannus Monday of Tennessee, who withdrew with an injury prior to the beginning of play. No. 2 seed Eliot Spizzirri of Texas and No. 4 seed Toby Samuel of South Carolina exited in the first round, and when No. 3 seed Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc of Florida State suffered a second round loss, all four quarters were wide open.
Americans took full advantage, with seven advancing to the quarterfinals, but Slovenia's Planinsek defied the odds, beating five players from the United States to earn the first singles title for men or women in Alabama's history.
