There is excitement in the air with the Kennesaw State University women's tennis team and it has nothing to do with aces, straight set wins or beating a top-20 team.
It has more to do with touchdowns, two-point conversions and blocked punts; terms that usually aren't discussed on the tennis court. But I recently discussed those topics, standing on a tennis court, with Kennesaw State University women's tennis coach Jeff Kutac.
Try being a women's tennis coach at a smaller Division I school, in a state that has traditional tennis powers like the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech, and a program on the rise that features one of the top players in the country, in Georgia State.
This is what Kennesaw's Kutac is up against, but he actually has embraced the "process."
"Right now we are looking to improve individually and as a program, but we can compete with anybody," said Kutac, as I attended the Kennesaw State Tennis Classic, one of the final college invitational tournaments of the 2012 fall season.
Compete is what they will be able to do more of in the coming years, as the sport of football is coming to Kennesaw State, although nobody connected with the university will say when.
I've heard 2014 or 2015.
"I like the way that sounds," smiled Kutac. "We still don't have a final word on that and when, but it's an exciting time to be at Kennesaw State."
