Top Prospect: Jacqueline Cako
by
Colette Lewis, 30 July 2008
Three years ago, Jacqueline Cako didn't win a match at her first national tournament, the 14s Easter Bowl. But now, the rising senior from Brier, Wash. is one of the most coveted recruits in the nation, and she has the voice mails to prove it.
"Everyone had my home phone number, so no one was reaching me," says Cako of the July 1st deluge. "I called back and started giving them my cell phone number."
Ranked 8th in the 2009 graduating class, Cako, who turns 17 next month, has a lengthy list of possibilities.
"I'm very open still," says Cako, who augments her homeschooling with classes at Cascadia Community College in nearby Bothell. "I still don't know what I want to do, where I want to go. I'm looking at USC, UCLA, U Dub (Washington), Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Northwestern... It just goes on and on."
All these options come as something of a surprise to Cako, who took up tennis at the age of eight, after abandoning gymnastics and finding she was too young for organized basketball.
