About the Star Ratings

Each year, TennisRecruiting.net awards Star Rating accolades to the best players in each class. The very best players are tabbed as Blue Chips, and we also award 5 Star, 4 Star, 3 Star, 2 Star, and 1 Star accolades to top prospects.

TennisRecruiting.net awards its Star Rating accolades twice a year: the Fall Ratings in late September, and the second Spring Ratings in mid-March. These awards are based on each player's two highest rankings achieved in the Class Rankings - which are the primary rankings at TennisRecruiting.net.

The ranking thresholds for each rating are as follows Players must earn two rankings during the Rating Period+ above the following thresholds (for classes with 800 or more ranked players++):

  • Top 25 - Blue Chip +++
  • Top 75 - 5 Star
  • Top 200 - 4 Star
  • Top 400 - 3 Star
  • Top 600+X - 2 Star ++++
  • Top 800+3X - 1 Star ++++

+ The Fall Ratings are based on the two highest rankings achieved in the Class Rankings for an eight-week "rating period" beginning in mid-July and ending in mid-September. The Spring Ratings are based on the two highest rankings achieved in the Class Rankings for an eight-week period beginning in early January. The actual dates for the rating period is announced each year around the beginning of the eight-week period. Note that a player has to reach a threshold twice during a rating period.

++ For classes with fewer than 800 ranked players, the thresholds are scaled down proportionally. For example, for a class with 400 players, the threshold for 2 Stars would be Top 300, 3 Stars would be Top 200, 4 Stars would be Top 100, etc.

+++ There is one additional criteria that can be met to achieve Blue Chip status. Players ranked in the Top 10 multiple times in the six-month period prior to the publication of the ratings will be tabbed as Blue Chips (to recognize highly-ranked players who stopped playing junior events).

++++ For classes with more than 800 ranked players, we increase the number of 2 Star recruits by 1 for every 3 players. That is, for a class with 1,100 ranked players, the threshold for 2 Stars would be Top 700; for a class with 1,400 ranked players, the threshold for 2 Stars would be Top 800.
