Although the NCAA tournaments and the European junior circuit grabbed most of the attention last month, there were plenty of personal milestones for the juniors and collegians competing in the smaller events on ITF World Tennis Tour. The NCAA singles champions are featured below, but check out TRN’s full coverage of the Division I team, Division III team, Division I individual and Division III individual events as college tennis goes on summer hiatus.
Paul Jubb
The University of South Carolina junior made history in two places at the NCAA Division I singles championships at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, becoming the first player from his school to win the NCAA title and the first player from Great Britain to capture the biggest title in collegiate tennis. Seeded No. 4, the 19-year-old from Hull avenged his two regular season losses to top seed Nuno Borges of Mississippi State, defeating Borges 6-3, 7-6(2) in the final to finish the 2018-19 season with a 38-4 record. The University of Miami junior took on the pressure of the top seeding at the NCAA tournament and held fast, earning the women’s singles title with a 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 2 seed Katarina Jokic of Georgia in a nearly three-hour battle. The 20-year-old from Spain, who reached the NCAA singles semifinals as a freshman, is the second Hurricane to capture the women’s title, with current University of Oklahoma women’s coach Audra Cohen winning the first, back in 2007.
