Savannah Broadus thought she would have more time to make her college decision. The blue chip junior from Carrollton, Texas didn’t expect a global health pandemic to impact her recruiting process.

But Broadus felt the trickle-down effect of the NCAA granting eligibility waivers for all spring sport athletes that had their season cut short this year because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Roster sizes and scholarship numbers for the 2021 class were suddenly up in the air. Broadus was able to visit Pepperdine and UCLA, but didn’t get the chance to travel to Duke or North Carolina before in-person recruiting was halted.
Broadus was already leaning towards selecting Pepperdine, but the changes hastened her timeline. She committed to the Waves earlier this month.
“They needed the decision sooner than they were hoping. They wanted to give me more time to make my decision, but because of the virus and the scholarships I needed to get it done,” Broadus said. “It doesn’t affect the incoming freshmen, but it does affect my year. All the schools are struggling with that.”
