After four months of looking back into the archives, August has produced 14 performances of consequence, allowing a return to our regular programming. Although significant junior tennis tournaments haven’t resumed, there have been notable results in pro tennis and in several of the nationally-organized competitions that have sprung up during the pandemic.
New York Empire
World Team Tennis kicked off the return of professional competition in the United States, bringing all nine teams to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia for its three-week season, which ended on August 1. The final between the New York Empire and Chicago Smash could not have been closer, coming down to one winner-take-all championship point. Coco Vandeweghe’s return winner in the women’s doubles Super Tiebreaker caught the baseline to give the Empire a 21-20 victory and their first World Team Tennis title.
Hady Habib
The rising senior at Texas A&M won the men’s singles title on his home courts at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Summer Championships, the culmination of the seven-week ITA Summer Circuit. Habib, the top seed, defeated No. 7 seed and defending champion Jonathan Sheehy, an Oklahoma graduate transfer, 6-1, 6-4 in the final. Habib, who did not drop a set in his six victories, earned $2,500 in prize money. (Photo credit: Jacob Dye, ITA)
