Wang Maximizes His Opportunities to Play for Carnegie Mellon

William Wang couldn’t wait to share the good news with his father.

Wang was born in Los Angeles, and moved to Taiwan with his family when he was 2. He followed his two older sisters into tennis and fell in love with the sport.

Four years ago, his parents made a big decision about moving back to the United States for better opportunities for their children. Wang, his mother and sisters headed to Austin, Texas while his father stayed behind in Taiwan.

The separation hasn’t been easy, and it motivated Wang to work even harder to reach his goals on and off the court. He loaded up on AP courses to get the best grades, and spent hours on the high school courts to improve his game.

Wang wanted to study engineering in college, and Carnegie Mellon University was at the top of his list. Once the four-star senior was offered a roster spot and committed to the Division III program in Pittsburgh, the first call he made was to his father in Taiwan.

“I am extremely grateful for him to provide me a life over here and I do think I have made the most of my four years so far,” Wang said. “I got into college and that made him proud. He was really excited for me.”

Wang has taken an unconventional route to tennis success. He doesn’t have a private coach, and spends a lot of time hitting at the Lake Travis High School courts. His mom or sister will feed him balls to help him try to improve.

“He is not your typical player these days. He is not an academy player,” said Lake Travis High coach Carol Creel. “He is kind of a self-made player. He is really motivated and dedicated.”
