Justin Yi wasn’t ranked as highly when he started considering his college options. He thought it might be a reach to contact the coaches at Carnegie Mellon University, a Division III program located in Pittsburgh.

But Yi decided to take a chance.

“Throughout this recruiting process, I learned that there is a lot more involved than just the level of play and ranking,” Yi said. “The coaches really have to see if you are a good fit for the school and the tennis team and if they like your playing style. I am really glad I found that out through my experience.”

The four-star senior from Wynnewood, Pennsylvania ended up being just what Carnegie Mellon head coach Mike Belmont was looking for. Yi joins three other four-star commitments in the program’s 2023 recruiting class.

“What made the decision easier was that Carnegie was close to home and I really love Coach Belmonte. He is really supportive and communicates really well,” Yi said. “When I made my visit to the campus, it was really nice and I feel the community is a really good fit for me.”
