Signing Week: Blue Chip Boys
Share:

This is a big week in college recruiting, with all focus on Wednesday. November 13 is the initial signing date for 2024-25 - better known as Signing Day.

Signing Day is the first day when seniors in the Class of 2025 can formally commit to NCAA Division I or II college tennis programs and secure athletic scholarships. The signing period runs all the way through next summer, so athletes and tennis programs will announce signings on their social media pages throughout the coming months, but Wednesday is when everything starts, and so we usually see a large number of verbal commitments get formalized with signed papers.

The most coveted prizes during this period are the Blue Chip recruits. TRN has reached out to these athletes to find out where they stand in the recruiting process. Today we take a look at the senior Blue Chip boys …

Blue Chip Status

The table below shows the Blue Chip athletes and their current recruiting status. The Commitment column shows whether the recruit has made a verbal commitment or is undecided, while the Interests column indicates schools of interest.

Off The Table

As you can see from the table above, 19 of the 26 college-bound Blue Chips have already made verbal college commitments, which leaves only 7 uncommitted. We expect more of these players to commit later this week.

Heels, Quakers and Frogs

Only three programs have commitments from multiple Blue Chip recruits. The University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, and Texas Christian University have two Blue Chip commitments apiece.

Tar Heel Head Coach Sam Paul, ACC men’s tennis win leader with 574 dual match victories and counting, has commitments from in-state recruit Ian Mayhew (Cary, N.C.) as well as Kase Schinnerer (Lewisburg, Penn.).

Quaker Coach Rich Bonfiglio is starting his third season at the helm of Penn Men’s Tennis, and he has excelled on the recruiting trail. His first recruiting class last year was ranked No. 11 in the nation - Penn’s highest-ever ranking. Bonfiglio is following that up this year with California recruits Adam Bain (Newport Coast) and Nischal Spurling (Los Angeles).

Horned Frog Coach David Roditi, fresh off his 2024 NCAA Team Title run, has turned on-court successes into recruiting success with Blue Chip commitments from No. 1 recruit Jagger Leach (Sarasota, Fla.) and Cooper Woestendick (Olathe, Kan.)

Scattershooting

Looking through the list …

  • Close to the Vest: While the majority of Blue Chip athletes are planning to attend college, few uncommitted players want to talk about their schools of interest.
  • Home Cooking: 6 of the 19 committed Blue Chips are heading to colleges in their home states. That bodes well for Florida colleges - 5 of the 8 uncommitted Blue Chips hail from the Sunshine State.
  • Power Up: 18 of the 19 committed Blue Chips are heading to schools from one of the five power conferences. The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos break up the party with a commitment from Blue Chip Lorenzo Brunkow of Topanga, Calif.
  • Welcome Back: With a commitment from Winston Lee of Cupertino, Calif., the California Golden Bears are back in the Blue Chip market for the first time since 2017 - the year they had the top-ranked recruiting class.
  • ACColades: The ACC currently leads all conferences with commitments from 7 Blue Chip seniors. The only other conference with more than 2 such commits is the Ivy League with 4.
