As a team from Southern California, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps isn’t thought of as an indoor team. But the Stags showed they can perform in any environment.
No. 2 CMS held off a late rally to beat No. 1 University of Chicago 4-3 in the ITA Division III Men’s National Team Indoors on Sunday at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minnesota.
Junior Warren Pham clinched the title for CMS, regrouping after a first-set loss to beat Michael Choi 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
“After reaching the championship match in three other attempts, this was an exciting step forward in our program’s history,” CMS head coach Paul Settles said. “This group put their big match experience and all-court skill sets on display in the most important moments over the weekend.”
The indoor showdown was a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Championships, which UChicago won 4-2 last May. CMS got its revenge with some of the players who experienced last year’s disappointment playing key roles.
CMS won the doubles point behind victories from Pham and Matthew Robinson at No. 3, and Advik Mareedu and Josh Kim at No. 2. CMS grabbed a 3-0 lead with Mareedu’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Derek Hsieh at No. 1 singles, and Kim’s 6-4, 7-5 over Pat Otero at No. 6 singles.
UChicago rallied to even the match 3-3 with straight-set wins by Emil Grantcharov at No. 2 singles, Alexander Ekstrand at No. 3 singles, and Sher Ajer at No. 5 singles.
In the title clincher, Pham grabbed the deciding break in the third set to take a 4-2 lead and closed out the match by winning the final three points. He was mobbed by his teammates in celebration in the aftermath.
