USTA Florida Donates to Bethune-Cookman's Facility Fund
Share:

Bethune-Cookman University recently received $100,000 from USTA Florida to help fund construction of the university’s first on-campus tennis courts.

The B-CU women’s team competes in the SWAC. The university does not have a men’s program. The Wildcats have held practices and matches off campus, which has limited student involvement and presented logistical issues.

“This is a tremendous investment in our university and our students,” BCU Acting President William Berry said. “We do not offer a major in tennis. Our tennis team players are studying biology and computer engineering. The fact that they are developing their minds and bodies while participating in a team sport speaks volumes about how ready they will be to depart the campus and make a contribution for the greater public good.”

The B-CU donation is the latest investment from USTA Florida to help historically black college and university (HBCU) programs. Last October, USTA Florida awarded its first-ever HBCU Tennis Program Grant to Edward Waters University (EWU). The grant, worth $100,000, will help EWU further develop its tennis program, which played in its inaugural season at the beginning of 2024.

USTA Florida visited the B-CU campus in Daytona Beach on Feb. 28 to present administrators with the $100,000 check.

"One of the main reasons we did what we did with this grant is being able to see more Florida students have educational opportunities and for supporting HBCUs," said Laura Bowen, executive director of USTA Florida. "I think it is also fitting that we are here today at a university named after a woman that gave so much of her life to shaping this community and our nation for the better. This is much bigger than a check today. This is a promise that USTA Florida is now an equal partner for the success of this program."
