Rivalries and Former Pac-12 Powers Highlight Sweet 16
Share:

Former Pac-12 Conference teams displayed their competitive mettle to survive the first weekend of the NCAA Division I Tournament and advance to the Sweet 16.

Seven former Pac-12 teams remain alive, including five unseeded teams. UCLA, Cal, and Stanford, now representing the Big Ten and ACC, respectively, are the women’s teams. No. 2 Stanford, No. 10 Arizona, UCLA, and USC, now representing the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten, respectively, are the men’s teams.

The Super Regional round of the tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at campus locations across the country. The men’s and women’s teams are all trying to advance to the Championship May 15-18 hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Nine of the top 10 seeds are remaining for the men and women, with both No. 6 seeds losing (San Diego men, Oklahoma women), including No. 2 TCU, the defending men’s champion, and No. 2 Texas A&M the defending women’s champion.

Half of the Sweet 16 features schools with both programs playing–NC State, Ohio State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas, UCLA and Virginia.

The Sweet 16 includes an unseeded match in both the men’s and women’s draw, with the Oklahoma State women hosting Stanford and the UCLA men hosting USC. The match between USC and UCLA will ensure an unseeded men’s team reaches the Elite Eight for the first time since 2010. The Oklahoma State women upset No. 6 Oklahoma 4-2 in a Bedlam rivalry postseason showdown to reach the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years.

Speaking of rivalries, USC-UCLA isn’t the only enticing one scheduled for Friday, with the other taking place on the women’s side between No. 5 North Carolina and No. 12 NC State. The Trojans edged the Bruins 4-3 in both earlier rivalry matches this season, while the Tar Heels beat NC State 4-3 and 4-1 in earlier meetings.

The LSU women have reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 25 years and third time ever in program history.
