Regular contenders making their return. Newcomers joining the fold. One-time powers back in the mix.
The quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis National Championship features a little bit of everything. All the action takes place Thursday-Sunday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The defending national champions are still alive in their pursuit for back-to-back crowns, with the TCU men and Texas A&M women getting to play in their home state.
No schools will have both their men’s and women’s teams in the Elite Eight. The SEC leads the way with a combined six programs, followed by the ACC with five, the Big Ten and Big 12 with two each and the Ivy League with one.
Women Start Thursday
The top three seeds advanced along with two double-digit seeds and an unseeded team
LSU is playing in the Elite Eight for the first time in program history after the 13th-seeded Tigers defeated No. 4 Ohio State 4-2. LSU’s 24 wins ties the program’s all-time best record set by the 1978 team. By contrast, LSU’s opponent, No. 5 North Carolina, will be appearing in the quarterfinals for the 13th time.
Top-seeded Georgia, the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor champion, is making its third straight appearance in the quarterfinals. UGA’s opponent, Duke, is making its 23rd NCAA quarterfinal appearance and first since 2022.
Defending national champion Texas A&M is making its fourth straight quarterfinal appearance. Top-ranked Mary Stoiana finished her A&M career with a 47-0 record in dual action on her home courts. The Aggies will play Tennessee, which has reached the quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history after upsetting No. 7 Virginia 4-0 on the road.
After a disappointing Sweet 16 exit last season as the top overall seed, unseeded Oklahoma State beat Stanford to reach the quarterfinals for the sixth time in program history and the first since 2017. The Cowgirls’ opponent, No. 3 Michigan, is making its third straight appearance in the quarterfinals and fourth in program history after outlasting UCLA in a thrilling match.
Men Begin Friday
The top four seeds advanced to the Elite Eight in the men’s bracket along with one double-digit seed and unseeded UCLA.
Historical stalwarts and former Pac-12 members, Stanford and UCLA, are back in the Elite Eight after extended absences. No. 4 Stanford, which has won 17 national championships, is making the program’s first quarterfinal appearance since 2012. The Bruins, who have won 16 national titles, have reached the quarterfinals 40 times, but this will be their first appearance since 2018.
UCLA will be squaring off against Texas, which advanced to the quarterfinals for the third straight season and fifth time in the last six years. The Longhorns’ 28 victories are the second-most in a season dating back to 1975, and one away from tying the 2019 team that captured the program’s first national title.
Stanford faces No. 12 Mississippi State, which upset No. 5 Ohio State 4-2 on the road to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2018. The Bulldogs avenged last season’s loss to Ohio State at the same stage of the tournament.
Top-seeded Wake Forest reached the quarterfinals for the fifth time since 2017 and extended the program record for single-season wins to 37. The Demon Deacons have beaten 21 ranked teams this season. They will take on No. 8 Columbia, which made history by advancing to the Elite Eight last season for the first time.
No. 2 TCU has reached the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season. In the Sweet 16 win against UCF, the Horned Frogs played with their full lineup for the first time since March 11. They will be meeting No. 7 Virginia, which is in the quarterfinals for the 18th time in the last 20 championships.
