Countdown: Chiu Heads East to Columbia
Share:

Holding the No. 16 ranking in California and the Southwest speaks volumes for 5-Star recruit William Chiu's talent. The senior from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, Calif., is producing some of the best tennis of his junior career, as he has now risen to No. 58 in the nation.

William Chiu has committed to Columbia
With results like these, it's no wonder his talent caught the eye of a few elite college tennis squads. And when decision time came and all his options were weighed, the scales tipped in favor of Columbia University, and Chiu has committed to joining the Lions' tennis team this fall.

In doing so, Chiu joins the ranks of a team that not only posted solid results last fall, but also boasts one of the top doubles tandems in the Northeast, not to mention standout singles players who sit at the top of the charts in the Northeast region.

As Chiu makes his move cross-country, where competition at the Ivy League level is of a high caliber, he believes he can provide a unique dynamic and be a positive asset to an already strong team.

"Being a lefty, I feel like I can bring a little bit of variety to practices and matches," he said. "I hope to be able to play on the starting lineup, which will be difficult to achieve given the strong roster Columbia currently has."

It's a goal he is confident he can achieve quickly, as long as he continues to improve and develop his arsenal of shots and tactics.

"I've been working on my backhand and net game to be able to play more aggressively on both sides and move forward," he said. "Although I'm more of a singles player, I'm trying to work on my doubles game as well, so that I can be a good all-around player for the team."
