It's not surprising that Liza Fieldsend is a pretty good tennis player.
Her brother, Beau, plays at Florida Tech in Melbourne.
Her mother, Debbi, played at
Oklahoma State and
LSU.
Her father, Jeremy, is the president of the John Newcombe Tennis Academy and Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas.
And her godfather, John, won Wimbledon three times. That would be John Newcombe, of course.
"Tennis has always been a huge part of my life, and I can't imagine my life without it," Fieldsend said. "My parents met because of tennis. I wouldn't even be alive had it not been for their passion for the game."
Fieldsend, ranked No. 64 in TennisRecruiting.net's ranking of high school seniors, has signed with N.C. State, which has nabbed two top-100 players for head coach Hans Olsen's recruiting class. The other signee is Natalia Janowicz of Palm Bay, Fla.
Fieldsend also visited Nebraska, Boise State and New Mexico in September but wound up on the East Coast, where she took a liking to the Raleigh area.
"I really clicked with the girls and liked the coaches," Fieldsend said. "Of all my visits, I spent the most time with the girls at N.C. State, and that helped a lot, seeing how it would actually be next year. I still have a lot that I can improve on and think I'll be able to do that at N.C. State because they're a developmental program. I'm hoping to be in top six my first year and play a lot of matches."
