Fall Signing Week '14: Lampl Heads West to Stanford
Share:

When you think of happy landings, think of Caroline Lampl.

Caroline Lampl is heading to Stanford
Lampl, a Blue Chip recruit in the Class of 2015, flew across the country in late September to visit her possible college destination. While she was there, she decided she wanted to attend Stanford, a university with a renowned academic reputation and unmatched women's tennis tradition. But there was just one problem: She wasn't sure she would get in.

After her journey to the California Bay Area, Lampl took a return flight from San Francisco to Dulles International Airport, near her home in Bluemont in Northern Virginia. One of the problems of the 21st century is that airplane passengers lack cell-phone service.

"After I landed at Dulles, I turned my phone on, and I received a text message from Coach Brennan," Lampl said of associate head coach Frankie Brennan. "It said, 'Call me as soon as you land.' I called him, and he was like, 'You're in.' "

What a relief.

A five-hour, non-stop flight can be stressful enough, but not knowing her admission status made it even more so.

"That whole plane ride, I was just so nervous," Lampl said. "I was thinking and worrying about it the whole five hours."

Now Lampl only has to worry about how to prepare for Stanford. According to the Tennis Recruiting Network, she is seventh in the senior class - her highest ranking ever - and she is ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Section in the USTA Girls 18s.

Along with Stanford, Lampl also visited and considered Vanderbilt, Virginia and Duke. But "I sent an application (to Stanford) in August that I had been working on during the summer."
