Domestic Tournaments Give More Players a Chance To Shine
Share:

After a long hiatus in the United States, interrupted only briefly by several major tour events, International Tennis Federation competition ramped up last month, at both the junior and professional levels. Add the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Championships to the overseas opportunities and the result is plenty of titles for junior players, as well as current and former collegians.

Trey Hilderbrand

The 20-year-old University of Central Florida sophomore faced off against his teammate Gabriel Decamps in the final of the ITA National Fall Championships, guaranteeing that neither had the advantage on their home courts at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona. The eighth-seeded Hilderbrand, a dedicated serve-and-volleyer, defeated No. 3 seed Decamps 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, with the match moved indoors due to rain. Alexa Graham

The fifth-year senior at the University of North Carolina dominated the competition at the ITA National Fall Championships, dropping only 16 games in five matches. The 22-year-old New Yorker, seeded No. 3, defeated No. 4 seed Abbey Forbes, a sophomore from UCLA, 6-4, 6-2 in the final. Graham, who won six of the eight deciding points in the championship match, is the second consecutive Tar Heel to win the Fall National title, joining teammate Sara Daavettila.
