Georgia Girls Make History in USTA Girls' 14 Final
by Julie Wrege, 14 August 2007
Flashback a couple of weeks to July 22nd. Grace Min (Lawrenceville, GA) and Whitney Kay (Alpharetta, GA) dueled for the championship in the USTA Girls' 14 Clay Courts in Plantation, Fla.
Now step forward to August 11: these same girls - seeded #1 and #2 - played for another singles championship on the nation's largest stage - the
USTA Girls' 14 Nationals at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga.
Top-seeded Min was nothing short of dominant in singles all week. She cruised through her first six matches. None of her opponents could take more than three games off of her in any set. The matches went quickly in the Georgia heat - the only match that lasted more than an hour was her semifinal victory over #5 seed Monica Turewicz (Lake Forest, IL) 6-3; 6-2.
Likewise, second-seeded Kay was impressive in her first five matches, winning all easily in straight sets. She got her first challenge in the semifinals against #3 seed Lauren Davis (Gates Mill, OH). The 3 1/2-hour match in temperatures nearing 100 degrees was a classic.
