Cardinal Direction

Stanford University’s 2025 campaign was one of grit and resilience. Battling injuries and the loss of key players to the professional ranks, the Cardinal - who finished the year ranked No. 22 nationally - pushed No. 15 Oklahoma State to the brink in the NCAA Super Regionals before falling 4-3, with the match decided by a pair of late third-set losses. The defeat ended Stanford’s season at 17-9, but also marked the program’s 43rd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 42nd trip to the Round of 16.

While the first season under Head Coach Frankie Brennan came up just shy of a quarterfinal berth, the future is unmistakably bright on The Farm.

Stanford brings in the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class for 2025 - a trio of elite Blue Chips that earned 342 out of a possible 350 points in our rankings, including six first-place votes. Leading the group is Monika Ekstrand (Delray Beach, Fla.), a Top 2 recruit and Grand Slam junior qualifier with an 11.7 UTR and a J200 title in Montreal. Joining her are Alyssa Ahn (San Diego, Calif.), whose resume includes a quarterfinal run at a pro-level W15 and deep draws at junior nationals, and Tianmei Wang (San Marino, Calif.), a two-time USTA national champion with a versatile all-court game.

With Brennan - a 30-year Stanford veteran and 12-time NCAA champion as an assistant - now leading the way and this top-ranked class arriving in the fall, Stanford looks poised to reassert itself on the national stage.

High Five

The University of Georgia climbs to No. 2 in our final rankings behind a deep and internationally flavored class. Blue Chip recruit Emily Deming (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Emma Dong (Montreal, Canada) committed in the fall, and they’ve since been joined by Deniz Dilek of Turkey and Patricija Paukstyte (Lithuania) to form a class that earned 335 points and six first-place votes from our panel. With a 2025 national title freshly added to the trophy case, head coach Drake Bernstein’s squad looks poised to maintain its grip on the top tier of women’s college tennis.

The University of Texas lands at No. 3 in our final rankings, continuing a strong recruiting run under Head Coach Howard Joffe. The Longhorns signed two Top 5 Blue Chip recruits in Elizabeth Ionescu (York, Pa.) and Christasha McNeil (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to earn 308 points and one first-place vote from our panel. This class might have ranked even higher had French standout Mathilde Ngijol-Carre, a three-time French Open juniors competitor, committed before our rankings were finalized. After last year’s No. 1 class, this follow-up group keeps the momentum going in Austin.

Rounding out the Top 5 are Pac-12 rivals USC and UCLA. The Trojans come in at No. 4, just ahead of the Bruins at No. 5 - who even picked up a first-place vote from our panel.

Conference Call

The new-look Southeastern Conference continues to make a splash on the recruiting landscape, placing nine teams in the Top 25 - including a remarkable six in the Top 10. Georgia (No. 2) and Texas (3) are joined in the Top 10 by the South Carolina Gamecocks (6), Oklahoma Sooners (7), Texas A&M Aggies (8), and LSU Tigers (9). The SEC’s depth is equally impressive, with the Vanderbilt Commodores (16), Mississippi State Bulldogs (22), and Ole Miss Rebels (23) also earning national recognition. With Georgia and Texas A&M meeting in the NCAA championship final this year, combined with the conference’s overall recruiting strength, the SEC continues to solidify its claim as the premier conference in women’s college tennis.

The ACC follows with six ranked programs, including the top-ranked class, while the Big Ten lands five teams in the Top 25. The Ivy League also continues its impressive recruiting push, placing three of its eight teams in the rankings.

Major Strides

All 25 recruiting classes in our rankings come from the five so-called “power conferences” - the four major football conferences (SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12) plus the Ivy League. We’ll highlight other conferences in our upcoming mid-major recruiting class rankings next week.

Service Winners

Scattershooting through the rankings …

  • Lone Star Power - 16 different states have programs in our rankings, but Texas stands alone with 5 ranked classes. Texas (No. 3) and Texas A&M (8) are joined in our rankings by fellow Texas programs Baylor (11), SMU (18) and Texas Tech (24). California was next-best with three teams making the list.
  • Streaking - Eleven schools have back-to-back ranked classes in 2025. That group includes Stanford (1), Texas (3), USC (4), UCLA (5), South Carolina (6), Oklahoma (7), Yale (13), Vanderbilt (16), Columbia (17), N.C. State (19), and Notre Dame (20).
  • Year After Year - Stanford (No. 1) leads all programs with an 11-year streak of ranked classes, dating back to 2015. Four of those classes reached the top spot. Columbia is next with six consecutive appearances.
  • Most Consistent - Stanford (1) and UCLA (5) are tied for the most all-time appearances in our women’s class rankings, with 19 each over our 20-year history.
  • Welcome Back - Ole Miss (23) returns to the rankings for the first time since 2011, marking the longest gap between appearances this year. SMU also makes a comeback, landing its first ranked class since 2013.
  • Welcome Aboard - Mississippi State makes its debut in our rankings with a historic first-ever appearance at No. 22. Hats off to second-year Head Coach Chris Hooshyar for making an early impact on the recruiting trail.
