Countdown: Christina Rosca Commits to the Commodores

Throughout her junior career, Princeton High School senior Christina Rosca has become quite the recognized athlete around New Jersey. Not only has she reached the top of the rankings in her home state and cracked the top 25 on the national level, she also won the NJSIAA State Championship in her sophomore year. So it's no surprise that she caught the eye of several prominent collegiate teams eager to have her join their roster this coming fall.
After a long decision process in which she strongly considered schools such as
Dartmouth,
Princeton,
Harvard,
Notre Dame,
Michigan and
North Carolina, Rosca announced that she has chosen
Vanderbilt and will join the Commodores women's tennis team later this year in Nashville.
"It took me a long time to decide on a college, but I wanted to figure out what subject I wanted to study because academics are very important to me," Rosca said. "I took my time visiting the campus at each school and getting acquainted with the coaches and teams. It was important for me to feel comfortable there. Soon I realized that Vanderbilt was the best choice for me to pursue my academic goals and compete at a higher level."
Not only is Rosca excited to be part of a team that won the 2015 NCAA National Championship, but she also is a strong believer in the program that head coach Geoff Macdonald has built there. And in order to facilitate a seamless transition to the collegiate level, Rosca said she has increased her fitness routine and started playing in pro-level tournaments. "My goal is to get to a level where I don't have to play catch up - I want to be fit and ready once I get there," she said.
And considering her dedicated work ethic, one that has taken her all the way to a career-high ranking of No. 23, achieving that goal should not be difficult for her. Among Rosca's proudest achievements in her junior career are winning the gold ball in doubles at the 2014 USTA Winter Nationals, and again reaching the doubles final there in 2015, when she also received the USTA Sportsmanship Award.
What's even more impressive is the fact that Rosca has dedicated herself to academics full-time while also pursuing a full-time junior tennis career. During her junior year, for example, she juggled five AP classes, college visits, SATs, national tournaments, and playing on the high school tennis team, on top of her busy tennis training schedule. And on the same day that she won the N.J. state championship, she had taken her PSAT exam that morning. But despite her demanding schedule, Rosca has handled her responsibilities quite well, both on and off the court.
As she takes her talents to Vanderbilt this fall, Rosca will enjoy a welcome change of a warmer climate compared to what she is used to in Princeton, and her interest in going to medical school makes Vandy a great fit for her both athletically and academically. Without a doubt, she will be a great contributor to the Commodore women's squad.
"I'm just thankful that the coaches at Vanderbilt have given me an opportunity to play for their team," she said. "I'm also thankful for my parents and all my coaches for helping me get to where I am today. I'm very excited about the future, and my goal is to play well and make a difference at Vanderbilt in both singles and doubles."
